A Note of Gratitude

Paul Frapollo

Over the years, we have had the good fortune of meeting many compassionate and caring people who have mucked stalls, fed breakfast and donated care items to keep our horses healthy. Among the most important and often unsung heroes of rescue are those who work quietly in the background, providing the financial and material support that helps us deal with the practical realities of caring for these wonderful animals. Our good friend Paul has supported our efforts for nearly five years. Throughout this time, his compassion for rescued horses has been expressed in especially tangible ways and his support has been truly invaluable in our efforts to provide for the needs of horses in our care. Without the kindness of people like Paul, we simply could not do what we do. We thank you so much for caring.

New Site New Provider

Thank you to all those who have commented on our new site over the past few weeks.  We too think it looks great, and all credit to our volunteer web designer Jones Tyler III.  Now, if you have experienced slow loading times, that too should be a thing of the past as we have changed providers.  My experience this morning has been that the site pages are loading very much quicker, and again we are indebted to Jones for directing us to Bluehost and helping with the transfer.

In Appreciation of our Volunteers

Volunteer Lunch, Farm Scenes 014

Saturday was Volunteer Appreciation Day and we celebrated by going out for Indian Food at the Mystiq Masala. We could not do what we do without the help of these wonderful people who generously donate their time and talent. From left to right are: John, Tom, Becky, Julia, Mara and Jorg. Not present but, still appreciated are Heather, Jones, Tim and Charles.

Our New Sign

Thanks to the creativeness of Heidi Powers we now have a brand new sign showing off our new logo. Heidi is a budding new illustrator and designer who wowed us with her idea for our logo makeover.

Thank you Heidi, we look forward to seeing your talents exhibited even wider.

White Bird Receives Donner Foundation Grant!

We are honored and humbled to have been awarded a Donner Foundation General Grant of $5000 this past week. This award will go a long way in helping us to care for urgent need horses with nowhere else to go. To the Trustees of the Foundation, our most sincere thanks for your kindness and compassion.

White Bird's New Logo

whitebirdfinal2In 2003, the founders of White Bird designed a logo that has been used for the past 6 years. While we’ve been fond of it, in a sentimental sort of way, the talented Heidi Powers has produced a more professional design that is simple, attractive and just feels right. Thank you, Heidi!

Intervet/Schering-Plough Donates Vaccines!

Huge thanks to the Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign and Intervet/Schering-Plough for their generous donation of rabies vaccines for our horses! We also owe a debt of gratitude to our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Randy Scarrow, for his support of our efforts throughout the past three years, as well as Dr. Tracy Spinelli for her outstanding care of Allison and her support of our equine “Dentathons.”

White Bird at VDOT CVC Charity Fair

The White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue has been invited to attend the VDOT Central Office, Commonwealth Virginia Campaign Charity Fair. This event will be held at VDOT’s headquarters at 1401 E. Broad Street in Richmond, VA on October 26, from 10:30AM to 1:30PM. VDOT and its employees have a long record of compassionate giving through the CVC. The latter organization has been a tremendous supporter of non-profits in Virginia. We hope to see you there!

Charlotte Crossing Visits White Bird

Misc John 10_12 026On October 12, White Bird was visited by the residents and staff of Charlotte Crossing, a psychosocial rehabilitation center in Charlotte Courthouse, VA that provides daily assistance to challenged adults. Braving some decidedly chilly weather, our guests were treated to a presentation of the rescue, a tour of the farm, visited the horses and got to see a number of other farm animals, including Tom’s cow-milking demonstration. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting this group and commend Charlotte Crossing for their compassionate and competent program.

Your support is more important than ever. The recession has hit everyone, horse owners and rescues alike. We have been inundated with calls for help and we are doing our best to help. But compassion alone doesn’t feed hungry horses. We need everyone’s help to provide horses with food, medicine and shelter. Even if you can’t come out and meet us in person, please consider helping out through the donation bar on this page. $4 buys a bale of hay, $2.50 a tube of wormer, and $15 will provide medication for a Cushings horse for a month. It adds up fast! We thank you so much for your continued support over the past 6 years and we hope we can count on your continued support to weather these rough times.
